A question about : How much electricity do you use in a day?
I thought of this, after watching the Panorama programme last week.
This morning at 8.30am I had a brainstorm and checked my electricity meter and wrote down the reading. The i whizzed round the house and turned everything off by the plug.
I am going to record the meter reading tomorrrow morning at 8.30 am to see how much electricity I used and to see if I can reduce it day by day or week by week.
I need to buy more electricity saving light bulbs as only have three in the house at the moment.
My reading I took today at 8.30am was 67076
Anyone want to join me?
Best answers:
- oooh, good idea I might try that!
my electric bills are way high (tumble dryer, washing machine and lights I think are the culprits)!!
will try it last thing tonight.
Caz - Great Caz, sounds like it's just and I at the moment! Oh well hope it will help us to cut down our electricity bill!
I will report back tomorrow with my reading. At the moment is it 67080 - so only used 4 units so far - My reading this morning is 67088 so 12 units used in a day!
Not bad, hoping i can reduce it today as I am going out for the whole day so i will turn my pc off! - This is a really good idea, and I'm going to try it tomorrow.
I bought a Kill-A-Watt the other week, and for 7 days had it in the kettle plug. Turns out we use about 1kwh per day. The other is thinking of investing in a kettle for the gas stove. - I'd love to jump on board please!
On another forum I was on, we did an 'electricity meter reading challenge' where we all took a reading, went about our 'normal' daily lives for a week and took another reading.
Then for the next week we shared ideas on what we were doing to *reduce* our consumption and took readings another week later to see where we had made savings.
it really raised my awareness and as my price capping is about to expire, I could do with a reality check again.
81652.4 is my reading.
Thanks for starting this thread
Bigpaws x - On average, we use 5.2 units per day. I tend to just read the meter at random intervals and my spreadsheet works out daily use since the last reading. It varies between 4 and 7 units although it did once work out at 9/day over a period of 3 days but I think perhaps I'd misread the previous reading (I checked 2nd reading when I got such a huge figure so know that one was correct).
Just wondering whether it might work better as weekly readings rather than daily readings? Reason being the chances are that your usage will be different on weekends to during the week so difficult to compare. Also, there are probably quite a few things which can make it vary significantly from day to day (such as washing machine use if you don't need to wash every day). Just a suggestion. - Ooh, can i join too?
I have been meaning to see how much we use in a day/week.
The meter reading at the mo is 59336. I'm in again tomorrow, so will check it at lunchtime. Everything but the fridgefreezer and the alarm is switched off, so will be interesting to see how much they gobble...how much is one of those kill-a-watt gadgets? - Ok, I'll have a go, too. Read the thread yesterday but forgot to take the meter reading today. I did run downstairs, though, after reading the OP, to switch off all the lights as nobody there - that should be a saving!
- hey, can anyone offer any help. trying to compare with other companies for gas electricity but dont know what to look for or what all the numbers and figures mean. any help??? confused and looking to save money.
- Interesting thread, I'm very sad 'cos I take weekly meter readings and graph my consumption on a spreadsheet.
I use between 35 and 46 Kwh a week which costs me Ј3.28 - Ј4.31 so that averages out at 0.54 pence a day.
