A question about : Car broke down
So our car broke down in the parking lot at work.
We called 2 mobile mechanics, paid a few hundred pounds on various parts and still not working. Now the mechanic said that we may try something that cost Ј500 (comes in a week) and may work. No guarantees. Car is worth about Ј3000
I am thinking of cutting our loses and sell the car to scrap or for parts ? Is it possible ? Do we have to have it towed home ?
Any ideas where to enquire ? This is the first car and have no idea about this things
We don't have breakdown insurance.
Just had the insurance paid last week Husband will have to give up this job and look for another as he can't get there without a car This is almost ruining us
Best answers:
- A bit more info on 'broke down' and what the car is would be useful.
Is it a Ј3000 car or is this the car you bought 2yrs ago for Ј3000

Easy to sell for scrap without moving it but certainly not cost-effective - maybe Ј120 to Ј150 - Don't waste another penny allowing chancers to throw parts at it willy nilly, and you'll be no better off with it at home.
Suggest you contact the nearest independent workshops that specialises in your make, hopefully they can recover the thing for you (unless they have a shrewd idea what it is and can send someone out), then diagnose it properly and fix it.
If you state the make and your approximate area someone here might have a recommendation for you. - Ford Focus 2007 automatic
- It broke down in Slough and we need to bing it London (Harrow)
- we paid 2 mechanics about Ј700 in the last 3 days with no result.
- What is the issue ?
- geee... wouldn't it be great if I knew what the issue is ! It's just not starting. and the mechanics seem to have no idea why
- Ask what has been repaired so far and what is now thought to need changing. Politely.
- so in other other words they are crappy mechanics
- I'm struggling here. Why did you pay someone Ј700 to not fix your car?
The normal procedure is that the mechanic comes and diagnoses the fault, then quotes you a repair price (for parts and labour). You accept it, he then repairs it. Or, you reject it and pay him a diagnostic fee only.
In this case, a key stage seems to have been left out...
Both these mechanics are either clueless incompetents, or saw you coming.
It's not rocket science to do basic diagnostics to find out why a car won't start (e.g. the electrical system, fuel system etc): that's what a mechanic is supposed to do, not just blindly fit parts and hope it works.
What parts have they actually replaced so far, and what are they now proposing to fit that costs another Ј500.? - Ran out of fuel?
- Wont start as in wont turn over or turns over slower than normal or turns over faster than normal??
- it won't start at all.
We have changed the crank sesnor (?) and the ignition coil - I would of thought that the meere they just replacing random bits?
What happened when it broke down, running then stopped?
You need to get this picked up on a recovery lorry (as some autos dont like being towed) and have a proper mechanic look at it.
Or advertise it on the e-bay for repairs and repairs, non-running for a start bid of Ј150 and sell it, you can leave it in the parking lot.....
